Whilst I have made the switch to Kindle for many books, I still buy real paper copies of certain kinds of book, including cook books. I absolutely love them and I love having a page open as I cook. I am also really interested in nutrition so my bookshelf is adorned with many many healthy eating books, including the ones that are currently quite trendy and well known in the UK (Eat Nourish Glow, Deliciously Ella, Hemsley Hemsley for example).
So of course I was dying to review a book by Dannii Martin who writes a food blog and lose weight by adapting common dishes and making them healthier.
Now I will say right away I really enjoyed this cookbook for a few reasons;
1. The quality of the book is good – just one of those fussy things that I look at.
2. The photographs are lovely and appetising.
3. There’s a breakdown of the nutrition for each dish in the corner so you know what you are getting.
4. The dishes are healthy – doesn’t matter if you want to lose weight or not, everyone should seek to eat well.
But here is the number 1 thing I liked about this book.
It is a very realistic cook book. The recipes are straightforward and free from fluff, they are clear and full of ingredients you can buy anywhere. It is not elitist nor will it cost you a fortune to make the dishes. You could very simply make these meals tomorrow with a simply supermarket shop.
My problem with the cook books I mentioned in the opening paragraph is that yes, they are full of the most up to date information on nutrition but they also include expensive or hard to get ingredients all the way through; Medjool dates, sumac, kombu, buckwheat puffs, activate this, activate that, make a broth that takes 14 hours…ok ok it’s great but sometimes I don’t have the time/money/patience.
This is where Hungry Healthy Happy shines – it is so easy peasy easy going in comparison with all of those books. If you are busy like me and you don’t always have fancy ingredients to hand, this is the book for you.
I have made several ingredients because it’s so straightforward. I love the toast toppers (obvious but useful) and the home made chocolate spread recipe is great. I also enjoyed the chicken wings which are super easy but health.
