I was in a big department store the other night (yes, night) and I was observing which beauty counters were the busiest. Whilst the big boys (Chanel, Dior, Estee Lauder) and the more obscure (Illamasqua, Shu Uemura) had a few people milling around, quite predictably, the super busy counters were MAC and……Bobbi Brown.
It’s not surprising I guess, since Bobbi Brown manages to create highly wearable and elegant colours that work for everyone. And even though they do tend to work with neutrals, their visuals for new collections always look yummy. Their newest collection, Rich Chocolate, is as yummy as it sounds.
I have three items here from the collection to review; Berry and Baby Pink Lipsticks (£19 each) and Pink Coral blush (£19) – there is also a deep berry blusher available, a gorgeous eyeshadow palette and other bits and pieces.
First off the blush, in Pink Coral. This is a bright looking cute flamingo pink. In the pan it’s the kind of thing I like – I like bright bold blushes applied lightly as I think they brighten up my complexion.
Upon swatching the colour I wasn’t so sure – I could see a whitish cast to the powder, and a slight powdery-ness which made me think it would disappear on my olive toned skin.
More on the blusher later.
The two lipsticks in this collection are Baby Pink and Berry. As soon as I saw these colours, I was like, HUBBA HUBBA. My wedding day lipstick was a pink by Bobbi Brown, and it was just ‘right’ on the lips…you know how you can love a colour but it does actually look a bit comical (hands up – I love my ‘dead’ looking nudes, I find them hard to quit but they can look stripper-ish).
This doesn’t happen with Bobbi Brown lipsticks – they are just pretty and flattering.
Baby Punk is a natural soft pink, which to me has a hint of beige. On my skin tone, it very much looks like a nude but as there’s no ashy-ness to it, it’s warm enough to just look like a pretty neutral.
Berry – now, I rarely crave berries and reds, but I have been trying more of them recently – I still wouldn’t chose one over a neutral. Well, this Bobbi Brown Berry is a game changer, because it’s such a pleasant, soft, wearable, pretty and still pinkish based berry, that you can wear it and know it doesn’t in any way you look like Cruella.
The Bobbi Brown lip colours are described as being ‘creamy, semi-matte…with rich, full coverage’. They are definitely creamy but not in an over the top way, and offer great pigmentation and coverage – two swipes is enough for me. As for semi matte – I actually don’t see them as mattes, although my beloved Pale Pink (my wedding colour) definitely is a LOT more matte then these two colours. I’d even say that they were more like creamy soft shine lip colours.
I don’t know if these have moisturising qualities but they felt really comfortable to wear.
In these pictures I am wearing the Bobbi Brown Pink Coral blush – even though it swatched poorly, it wore really well on my face! Not too bright, not too powdery, not unnatural, but gave a really fresh pop of colour. I like that it wasn’t quite matte but there wasn’t any frosty shimmer or glitter in it either. I was VERY pleased with this blush.
Berry – again, I would rarely reach for a plummy shade for every day, unless I was blogging about it but this is such a lovely, tasty berry that I thought was quite flattering on and once again made my dry lips look healthy:
Erm…I have make up on one eye and not the other. Don’t ask. Life of a beauty blogger. But you get the jist – I thought this was a lovely complexion brightening colour:
So there are just some snippets from the Bobbi Brown Rich Chocolate collection – not wacky colours by any means but very pretty and wearable. I need to go and check out some BB pink lipsticks, I think she makes some really perfect pinks!
Do you like these colours or are they boring?!
